Things I couldn't tell apart as a child

India and Africa
They both have elephants.

Cucumbers and zucchinis

Rhinoceros and hippopotamus
I knew what they were, just not which was which.

Australia and Austria
Not even the Von Trapps could clear up the similar names.

Rhododendrons and azaleas

Comments

If it helps any, they are all rhodies. All azaleas are in the genus Rhododendron, they are a sub-series. So every azalea is a rhody but not every rhody is an azalea…Don’t even get me started on the Sweet William/Dianthus debate…

Yes, I was very gratified when I learned that—of course, when I was little, it was just that they looked alike and my grandma grew them :)

Is the nursery at which you work in Portland proper?

No, the nursery is in Aloha/Beaverton…I am forbidden on pain of death to reveal the name on the internet, as my manager, The Big Cheese, is a tad paranoid, but it’s located out on Highway 10….

Hmmm…p’raps I will e-mail you and find out where exactly. Since Greystork knows me, he can vouch that I am not a crazy :p At some point I need to do Things to my yard. There are Things I do not like. Such as too many rhododendrons. And ARBRAVIDA (spelling? If I had my druthers, I’d spell it E-V-I-L.)

That’s fine. Maybe I can help. When someone needs a shrub, I must be there… :-) Arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis. E-V-I-L is spelled PHOTINIA.
