This morning I got dressed and put on my Republicans for Voldemort T-shirt. Now, as I do every time I wear this T-shirt, I fought down a certain fear of confrontation, as well as a guilty feeling that I was being hypocritical (since I try to combat the tendency towards hyperbolic partisan politics in my country), largely by squashing my doubts with the ‘but it’s so funny’ battleaxe.
Of course, then I ended up going downtown. The first car I was behind in town was a big ol’ red pickup truck, complete with a beflanneled grandpa; with a bumper sticker that read “Bush is a Moron (and you know it)”.
The next car’s sticker ran, “Frodo has failed; Bush has the Ring.” The next had the old standard, “Mission NOTHING Accomplished,” and the next had gone for the simple elegance of a circle and strike-through over the letter ‘W’.
I don’t think I should have worried.

I wore mine to the Kerry rally back in August. I got a whole lot of compliments, several funny looks, and one person who asked me, “So, are you a Republican for Kerry or something?” Her friend took her aside and explained it to her.
I wear it around school fairly often, and I have the sticker on my nalgene. Then again, I go to Lewis & Clark, which is infested with anti-Bush folks and has quite a number of Harry Potter fans, so I can’t think of a better place for it.
Re: Hee hee
I haven’t gotten any grumpiness or questions on mine…I can’t recall whether I got any comments the first time I wore it. Pity I didn’t have it for my last day at OHSU, as several of the scientists would have adored it.
Now I just need a T-shirt store to think of the T-shirt I REALLY WANT, which says (pref in simple 50s-propaganda print):
WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH EURASIA.
I can never decide if the back should say “We have always been at war with Eastasia.” or just be blank.
Re: Hee hee
I would actually add that I don’t wear it when I know people I like who lean rightwards are about. There are some limits to my trampling on my own ideals of civil discourse!
